ABOUT THE IPRH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Faculty and Graduate Student Fellowship awards are the centerpiece of the IPRH, with application guidelines distributed in the fall of the academic year prior to the fellowship year, and the announcement date in late winter. The fellowship program revolves around a thematic topic – the theme for 2006-07 will be “Beauty” – and the fellowship provides an opportunity for UIUC faculty and graduate student fellowship award recipients to develop research related to the theme in all of it many broad interpretations.

The IPRH welcomes applications from all disciplines and departments. “Beauty” is a topic that will allow faculty and graduate students in a wide variety of areas of humanistic inquiry to reflect on the question of beauty in all of its varieties. The topic should also provide an opportunity for artists and writers to consider the relevance of beauty in their creative practice. The IPRH encourages applications from all sectors of the university with an interest in interdisciplinary and humanities-inflected research. (A full description of the theme can be found here.)

All IPRH Fellows are expected to maintain residency on the UIUC campus during the award year, and to participate in the Program’s annual conference and related activities, including the yearlong interdisciplinary Fellows’ Seminar. Fellows will be provided with office space and limited research support by the IPRH.

Faculty Fellows are released from one semester of teaching, with the approval of their departments and colleges. Faculty Fellows continue to earn sabbatical leave credit and receive their regular salaries from their departments, and the IPRH generously reimburses departments for all faculty awards. Faculty Fellows are also asked to teach one course, during the award year or the year immediately following, on a subject related to their fellowship project. Faculty members who have previously held an IPRH fellowship may not reapply to the IPRH for five years following the year of the award. Faculty members are likewise prohibited from holding IPRH fellowships and Center for Advanced Study, Humanities Release Time, Mellon, or other campus release-time awards simultaneously.

Because the IPRH encourages interdisciplinary work, joint applications are invited for the Faculty Fellowship program. Please see the application guidelines here for more information about joint project submissions.

Graduate Student Fellows receive a stipend of $7,000 and a tuition and fee waiver if one is not otherwise provided. Advanced students in any UIUC graduate program may apply. Graduate students who have previously held an IPRH fellowship may not reapply. Graduate Student Fellows may also hold appointments as teaching/research assistants during the fellowship year, but these appointments may not exceed one-third time (33 percent). Since the goal of the IPRH Graduate Student Fellows program is to provide advanced graduate students with the opportunity to pursue their research, however, we do want to discourage students, wherever it is feasible to do so, from serving as Fellows and teaching/research assistants simultaneously. Graduate students may not hold an IPRH fellowship and a Center on Democracy in a Multiracial Society fellowship, or other similar campus or off-campus award, simultaneously.

The deadline for application is Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. All application materials, including supporting letters, must be received by this time; deadline extensions will not be granted. Application guidelines are located here, and a copy of the application form can be found here.
