Visiting Fellowships
Institute for the Humanities, University of Michigan

  • Each year the Institute invites a group of scholars, writers, artists and performers from outside the University for residencies of, typically, two to five weeks. There is no formal application process. Instead, the Institute asks colleagues at the University to nominate visitors who will contribute creatively and diversely to the intellectual community of the Institute, the University, and the community. These calls for nominations are sent around the University at the appropriate time of year.  The Institute Executive Committee reviews these nominations in its effort to develop a group of visitors representing a variety of disciplines, theoretical approaches, eras, and geographical areas. During their residencies, Visiting Fellows give one or more talks, meet with students and colleagues, and work on their own projects. Those who are here for five or more weeks offer a course.  Most visitors come for short residences, but one, the Norman Freehling Visiting Professor, comes for a full semester.
